Advanced Snow Management (ASM) program

Strength of service is only as good as the people who power it.

The ASM program has four courses, and participants who complete them all will receive the Advanced Snow Manager (ASM) designation. Start with ‘Core Principles’ (a pre-requisite for all others), and complete the others in any order.

ASM core principles

The Advanced Snow Manager (ASM) designation is an official credential from SIMA. It is NOT a certification, it is an officially recognized designation that requires no ongoing education or investment once it is achieved.

ASM | Core Principles

 

The Core Principles course is a pre-requisite for all other courses in the Advanced Snow Management program. It can be used to prepare individuals for other courses in the Advanced Snow Management program, or as a stand-alone training course for operations personnel.

 

  • Standardized basic safety training specific to snow
  • Simple instruction on key conditions/variables related to winter weather
  • Review of various governmental bodies and any existing regulations
  • Introduction to concepts of cycling equipment and manpower through sites consistently
  • Insight into interpreting a site engineering plan
  • Standard review of the importance of onsite documentation of operations

 

The course is constructed using best practices in adult learning to help individuals learn at their own pace.

    ASM | Ice Management

     

    This course is part of the Advanced Snow Management program, and is focused training for Ice Management equipment and techniques, including:

     

    • Understanding the relationship between moisture and temperature, and their impact on ice management decisions in the field
    • Preparing ice management equipment for maximum efficiency
    • Critical insight into major deicing chemicals, especially related to changing conditions.
    • Applying anti-icing and de-icing techniques.
      Understanding the principles of calibration and various application rates.

     

    This course is a part of the overall process of becoming an Advanced Snow Manager (ASM), or it can be training and an official certificate for operators who focus solely on ice management. Remember, anyone seeking to earn their certificate in Ice Management must first earn their Core Principles certificate.

    All ASM courses are constructed using best practices in adult learning to help individuals learn at their own pace.

    ASM | Plowing Operations

     

    This course is part of the Advanced Snow Management program, and is focused training for efficient and safe plowing, hauling, and blowing:

     

    • The effects of moisture and temperature on snow plowing strategy.
    • Preparation and maintenance of snow plow equipment.
    • Safety practices for attaching, detaching, and adjusting various plows and blowers.
    • Instruction on best practices for snow plowing techniques.
      Proper on- and off-site snow hauling

     

    This course is a part of the overall process of becoming an Advanced Snow Manager (ASM), or it can be training and an official certificate for operators who focus solely on plowing operations. Remember, anyone seeking to earn their certificate in Plowing Operations must first earn their Core Principles certificate.

    ASM | Sidewalk Operations

     

    This course is part of the Advanced Snow Management program, and is focused training for Sidewalk Operations, including:

     

    • Recognizing how moisture and temperature affect sidewalk clearing strategies.
    • Understanding the interdependence between snow plowing, sidewalk clearing, and ice management.
    • Identify all pedestrian areas which need to be cleared of snow.
    • Identify equipment used in sidewalk clearing and know how to prepare equipment.
    • Be able to apply efficient and safe sidewalk clearing techniques.
    • Interpret a site engineering plan as it relates to sidewalk clearing.
       
    • Critical safety-related information tied to Public Access Routes, priority clearing areas, and more.

Remember, anyone seeking to earn their certificate in Sidewalk Operations must first earn their Core Principles certificate.
